Women Veteran Day | A 3-5 Day Literature-Based Study for All Ages
Women's Veterans Day is observed every June 12, marking the anniversary of the Women's Armed Services Integration Act, signed into law by President Harry S. Truman in 1948. It was the first time women could serve as permanent, regular members of the U.S. military. This mini-unit explores that history honestly, from the women who served long before the law acknowledged them, to the legislation that changed things, to the question of how communities decide what is worth remembering.
This is a 3-day, open-and-go unit for families learning together. Every day follows the same rhythm so children can settle in and focus on the content. The anchor text is Heroism Begins with Her by Winifred Conkling, with companion book options leveled for every reader in your home.
What is included:
3 full content days, each with a written narrative page, a curated read-aloud, discussion questions, a hands-on activity, a noticing prompt, and age extensions for four learning tiers. This unit works for ages 3 through 13, all learning together. Age extensions scale the same shared activity across four tiers: Pre-Reader (3-5), Early Reader (5-8), Established Reader (8-10), and Analyzing Reader (10-13).
