A 3-Day Literature-Based Mini-Unit | Preschool through 8th Grade | Family Style | Secular

Around 1.6 million young people in the United States grow up in military families. They move every two to four years. They change schools six to nine times before graduation. They learn to say goodbye before they are old enough to understand why. This unit was written for them, and for every family that wants to understand their world.

Military Kids: A Family Serves is a three-day, literature-based mini-unit designed for the Month of the Military Child (April) and for any time of year your family wants to explore what it means to serve, sacrifice, and stay connected across distance. Each day follows the same simple rhythm, read together, talk together, make or do something together, and notice the world around you, so families can settle in and let the books do the heavy lifting.

The unit is written directly to the child sitting in the room. Not about military kids. For them.

What is included: Three full lesson days, each with an informational reading page, a facilitator read-aloud framing, rich discussion questions, a hands-on activity, and a noticing prompt. Age extensions for Pre-Readers through Middle School are built into every lesson so all your children can participate in the same shared experience at the depth that is right for them. The unit also includes a unit overview, a "How This Unit Works" page, an art component featuring fine art centered on waiting, homecoming, and family, open enrichment options for days four and five, a curated companion reading list organized by theme, a sources page, and a meet the author page.

Anchor texts used in this unit (books sold separately): Day 1: It Takes a Family to Serve by Lisa Wheeler Day 2: Deployment: One of Our Pieces Is Missing by Julia Cook Day 3: I Love You Near and Far by Marjorie Blain Parker

This unit is for your family if: You are a military family and want your children to feel seen. You are not a military family and want to raise children who understand a world beyond their own. You are looking for a unit that is honest, warm, and built around excellent books rather than worksheets. You want something you can open and use without hours of preparation.
